Opening Your Above Ground Swimming Pool

Opening Your Above Ground Swimming Pool

Each year after a long winter it's time to get your above ground swimming pool up and running by opening it for the spring and summer. Before you get started make sure you have a full list of supplies that you will need to open your pool. You will need the proper pool chemicals including shock and chlorine (or whichever type of sanitizer you use such as Baquacil or Bromine). Also make sure you have at least one other person available to help you.

Before you get started make sure your pool cover is completely drained off of all water. Also do your best to get all of the debris off your cover before removing it. You do this because when removing your cover, if it accidentally goes in the water, all that debris won't go in with it. Once you've cleaned off the cover it's time to remove it. Undone the cable and winch that secures your cover and slowly pull the cover off the pool.

If you have a fence you will need to use your deck to do this, or if you don't have a deck you will need to lift it over your fence.

Once the cover is off (fill the pool to the middle of the skimmer if need be) you need to get your filter and pump up and running. If you don't know how to do this consult your nearest swimming pool dealer on how to operate your filter and pump.

Once your filter and pump are up and running wait until dusk and double shock your pool by adding 2 one pound bags of shock per ten thousand gallons of water and make sure you get your sanitizer in there. And then get your water tested at your local pool store.
