What Is Special About The Mountains of Big Canoe, Georgia?

Georgia is known as Big Canoe's gorgeous mountain community. It is situated in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains with a scale of about 8000 arces. These days it has about 2500 houses with room for more than 1500 people.

Big Canoe has been a popular destination for mountain vacationers and second home buyers for many years, and is rapidly becoming a full time residence for many people because of its close proximity to businesses locating in the northern suburbs of Atlanta.

Why is Big Canoe so popular? Because there's something for everyone to enjoy. To begin, there's a new $10 million state-of-the-art country club completed in 2008. The facility is host to a fine dining experience overlooking the mountain vistas, the Black Bear Pub where golfers unwind after a round, a golf pro shop, and numerous meeting rooms for conferences and private events.

Then there are 27 holes of golf with very active MGA and WGA programs.

Plus, there are five or six additional golf groups who play on various days of the week, so there's no problem finding a place to fit in, no matter what play level. Both the MGA and LGA offer a full array of organized tournaments during their own seasons lasting from early spring to late fall.

Tennis is another option. There are 10 courts including two indoor courts, four outdoor clay courts and four outdoor hard courts. The very active Big Canoe Tennis Club participates in both ALTA and the North Georgia Mountain League. The club also offers clinics and events to inspire everyone to learn and enjoy the sport.

Another popular amenity is the 16,000 square foot fitness center which offers a complete line of machines, equipment and weights, and aerobics and exercise classes, including many traditional classes and water classes in the heated indoor Olympic pool. There's also racquetball, squash, and wally ball and various physical therapy and personal trainer professionals available. Relax in the sauna and enjoy the juice bar after an invigorating workout.

If swimming is your thing, there are three pools to choose from. The main zero-entry Olympic pool overlooks Lake Disharoon complete with a sand beach and swimming lake. Then there's the new Olympic-sized pool in the Wildcat section of the community and the indoor Olympic pool at the fitness center. Don't forget the rock slide at Lake Disharoon and the canoes and paddle boats included for free with a membership or pass to the main swimming pool facilities.

What's more, try 25 miles of marked scenic hiking trails leading to waterfalls and breathtaking vistas winding throughout the community. And there's a marina on Lake Sconti offering boating and fishing. Need more? How about several ball fields, a dog park, and children's playgrounds with tons of equipment.

The community also sponsors concerts and events at their own amphitheater. And if you are a homeowner there's even more options such as numerous clubs and organizations ranging from a dozen or so book clubs to painting to woodworking to knitting to gardening and many more.
